American River

Granite Creek Trail, a 4,000 foot plunge down into the North Fork American River, and a brutal climb out. I set off with one goal: to capture the hidden beauty of the canyon.

Once I reached the bottom, I found the perfect camp spot beside a crystal-clear swimming hole. The water was cold and refreshing after the hot hike. I swam for a while with my goggles and underwater camera taking in all the beauty underneath that hardly anyone probably sees. As I emerged, dark clouds crept over me. The smell of rain hung in the air, and the wind picked up, filling me with dread. I did not want to get caught in a storm down here.

Just when I thought a storm was about to breakout, the clouds began to part. I was spared. Golden rays of sunlight burst through, bathing the canyon in an otherworldly glow. The river shimmered, and the rocks glistened under the softened light. It was the perfect moment, and I hurried to capture it with my camera. The reflection of the forest in the calm water was stunning. It was like a Bob Ross painting come to life.

Then came time to finish setting up camp for the night. I had heard that there were bears in the area, and as I slept, I could hear one trying to get into my food, making me a little nervous as I slept. When I awoke, I went to check on my food, and I saw a huge thing of bear scat in the camp. Further solidifying my concern that there was a bear in the camp during the night. Luckily my food was secure and nothing came of it.

The next day, the climb out tested every ounce of strength I had. My legs burned, and my lungs strained, but I pushed through, thinking of the image I had captured. Each step through the pine-scented air reminded me that the struggle had been worth it. I had faced the canyon, the threat of storm and bears, my own doubts, and come away with something truly extraordinary.
